For Christmas of 2000 I decided to give my wife a new
bathroom in our Waianae, HI home. The existing bathroom was over 40
years old didn't even have a tub, only a shower stall! First I had to
remove the existing sink and lavatory (that I had just installed the month
before!). Since it was new, it was saved to be reused.
Our new tub sitting in the living room waiting to be
installed.
These pictures show the first plumbing
attempt. The idea was to run the plumbing over the floor to the other side
of the room where the new lavatories will be located and then cover the lines
with a raised floor. In the pictures you can see the outline of the old
shower stall in the floor after knocking down its walls. The drain in the
floor is the existing drain from the old shower. Along the wall is the
drain vent line and the supply water lines from the old sink connection.
The extension of the drain line behind the toilet is for future plans on
installing a sink outside just on the other side of the house wall.
The wall of the bathroom was moved about two feet
over into the adjacent bedroom to give room for the lavatories. This is
the trial fit-up of the lavatory to determine measurements for the drain and
water lines.
After taking fit-up measurements, I decided it was
easier to run the lines around the perimeter of the room instead of directly
across the floor. This way I didn't have to redo the flange for the toilet
from building up the floor.
Testing the tub before installing the tub
surround to ensure it is level!
(Later
on we found out that the side against the wall sagged about 1/8 inch when full,
causing the caulking to keep breaking loose.)
Installing the tub surround, this is a one
piece surround and was hard to install with just one person!
Installing wallboard on the new wall
behind the lavatory area.
The plumbing and vent line for the second
lavatory to be installed.
