It has rained virtually every day since I returned to Japan
on 01 April, especially on the weekends! It finally cleared up enough for
me to go out and try a short hike. On my way to the forest, I passed by
these rice paddies with interesting birds in them.
Since the weather was still cloudy and possibly could rain
again, I decided to go to the Bodai Dam area which is only a few miles from the
apartment. The trails are past the dam and lake themselves. This is
the road that leads from the back of the lake to the hiking area.
Here is a view of the hardwood forest that I intend to hike
in today.
There are several signs with information and directions on
them in the area. Unfortunately, they are all in Japanese so don't do me
much good. The trail maps I can usually figure out after being in the area
a couple of times.
The trail follows the head waters and streams feeding the
Bodai Dam.
This is fairly hilly area with many steep climbs
on the trail. In several places there are steps to help you climb.
This was very useful since the trail was wet from all the rain that we have had
recently.
Some various pictures along the
trail. In many places it is difficult to tell where the trail actually is!
I saw this really pretty butterfly on the
trail and tried to get its picture. Since I couldn't get too close to it
these are the best I could do!
